The cover of the book is made yellow to replicate a special TKF Foundation journal kept inside a bench on site. Visitors are encouraged to write in the journal and reflect their experience on May 22, 2011. Research has shown that this is way to begin the healing process.
The book guides its reader through the conceptualization, development, and construction of the project. Pages are set up with chapter titles and a description of what the page is about, much like one might read on construction documents.
Near the end of the book, a research section better explains the TKF Journal and shares a few entries. Some are scanned and translated into the book while others are sorted and the best lines are placed in the book.
Below is a close up of a scanned entry. The weathered pages and handwritten message make the book feel very relateable and tangible.
The back cover was kept simple to mimic the back of the journal. We did not want ISBN numbers or barcodes to disrupt the back cover design.
